Introduction | Dean's Diary | Emma's Diary | Photo Gallery | Calgary Links Canada 2000 Report - Trip Diary Wednesday 5th July Well, it's now 9:21am UK time, I'm sitting in the departure lounge waiting for my breakfast before I fly. We all seem very excited but extremely tired. This trip to Canada is going to be a memorable experience, and one we may never experience again. Everybody has arrived now and is either checking-in or waiting to depart. All instruments have been put onto the plane and all luggage won't be far behind. Well I have to go now as my breakfast is here I will write again later.
Thursday 6th July I'm too tried to write tonight. I will tell you tomorrow what we did today.
Friday 7th July It's 10:10pm Canadian time, which makes it 4:10 pm in the UK. It's still very warm in Calgary and the Sun has just set. I have been very tired, I was planning to write more on Wednesday and an entry for yesterday, but by the time we had arrived and settled in there was no time left to write. A lot has already happened. Today we took part in the Opening Ceremony of the Calgary Stampede. There were thousands of people and the atmosphere was electric. The parade seemed to go really well, even though I ended up in an ambulance on Oxygen due to heat stroke. The people here are all very friendly and have made us all seem very welcome. Well tomorrow we are going to Lake Louise and Banff. Well I had better go, early start again tomorrow. GOOD - NIGHT
Saturday 8th July What a day it has been. I hardly know where to begin. It has been a day full of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It started by us all travelling to Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains. The view of the blue lake surrounded by the snow capped mountains was breath taking. The sun was shining we could not have asked for better weather. We then went to the Ski lifts, which took us part of the way up the mountains to take a panoramic look at the lake and surrounding mountains, the view was beautiful. Finally we had the chance to go swimming in the Hot Sulphur Springs or go shopping in Banff. I choose the first option as I thought shopping is shopping, you can do it any place, anywhere. But swimming in a hot pool of spring water set in the mountains, well do I need to say anymore? What a great day and one I will ALWAYS remember. It's now 11:35pm Canadian time, 6:35am UK time. I feel I had better go and get some sleep before the Band Championship Opening Ceremony tomorrow. Write again tomorrow again hopefully SLEEP TIGHT
Sunday 9th July Again today has been a VERY busy day. The whole day has been taken up by the Opening Ceremony of the World Show Band Championships. We had a practice this morning. Then this afternoon we had a practice as a massed band and then had time to walk around the Stampede before the actual performance. We marched onto the arena played our pieces of music and then marched back off. This was an enjoyable experience had by all.
Monday 10th July We have finally done it. We have taken part in the World Championships and earned ourselves a Silver. At the moment we are the highest scoring English band, so everybody is very happy and proud. The day started by having a long practice in the beautiful warm, sunny weather. The practice did not go that well, but we pulled the performance off when we most needed it. The atmosphere after we had finished playing was electrifying with the audience giving us a standing ovation and numerous cheers throughout the whole performance. We have all been to the Chuckwagon Racing tonight. We all had a lot of fun, and it helped us all to relax after a long day. All we can do now is sit back and wait until Greater Manchester Scout and Guide band has performed as well as Hessle High School. Just have to keep our fingers crossed.
Tuesday 11th July Today has been a very eventful day. This morning we played at an Old People's home. I got talking to a lady that want's me to keep in touch and tell how the band is doing. Also today was the day in which Greater Manchester and Hessle High performed. Bad news's Greater Manchester beat us by 0.8 points. But Hessle High is the band to go through to the finals to represent Great Britain and I wish them the very best of luck.
Wednesday 12th July Today we had a free day and could do what we wanted. Keith (my boyfriend) and myself decided we would go shopping and get the presents we needed. We went in to Calgary City Centre and found the biggest shopping mall I have ever seen. It has four floors and has 2.4 acre of gardens on the fourth floor. We have spent all day walking round and have not yet to see it all. Oh, well there is always tomorrow after the parades in the morning.
Thursday 13th July I now realise how big pancake breakfasts are in Canada. We performed at two of them and what a turn out. There were hundreds of people at both. The band performed extremely well, what a way to end our performances in Canada. After that we went shopping again, never did see all the shops never mind, maybe next time. To end the trip off Keith, Andrew (my brother, the Bass Drum player) my mom, and myself all had our evening meal at the top of the Calgary Tower. It was wonderful. Well it's going to be a big day tomorrow so Good - night.
Friday 14th July Today's a really sad day for all, this is where our beautiful trip ends. We have all packed our instruments and suitcases and are all ready for the off. We have done our own things again today. Keith, Andy, Mom and Myself went to a beautiful park surrounded by the river. Well the flight has just been called, so I had better go so, Good-bye Canada Hope to see you again soon.
